The prevalence of overweight and obese pets has reached epidemic levels in the United States. However, less than 10% of pets successfully lose weight following diagnosis, and of those that do, roughly 40% resume their overweight status within 12 months. Unfortunately, treating obese and overweight pets isn't as simple as reducing caloric intake and increasing caloric expenditure, especially in small breed canine patients. In this program, attendees will learn about how to assess and address obesity in a small breed canine patient through a case presentation.

Cardiovascular disease in small breed dogs can be very challenging as many of them present with similar clinical signs. Sorting through these cases can be difficult as they are at times not as straight forward as we would like them to be. Many of these patients are overweight as well, which can exacerbate their symptoms. Getting these patients to lose weight, however, is equally as challenging as they often are not able to exercise to any great extent in order to increase their caloric consumption. In this presentation, attendees will walk through a challenging case of an overweight, small breed dog with a big heart. Diagnostics and therapeutic treatments, including nutritional intervention, will be discussed.

Periodontal disease is a very common problem for small breed dogs. The chronic inflammation and infection of the gingival sulcus and periodontal pockets cause decrease periodontal support for the teeth. Small breed dogs are predisposed to periodontal disease due crowding of the teeth in the mouth, short root length and difficulty in providing daily plaque control. In this program, attendees will learn about pathogenesis, identification, complications, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease.
